Arromanches

Arromanches has remained famous as one of the historic sites of the Normandy landings (code name: Operation Neptune), notably for the artificial port that was installed there. It was on the beach of Arromanches that, during the Battle of Normandy, immediately after D-Day, the Allies established the Mulberry Port, a temporary artificial harbour to allow the landing of heavy equipment, without waiting for the conquest of deep water ports such as those of Le Havre or Cherbourg. Although located in the center of the Gold Beach landing zone, Arromanches was spared the brunt of the fighting on D-Day. In order to allow the installation of a harbour and its proper functioning as quickly as possible, the beach had to be preserved and the communication routes in the vicinity had to be preserved. The port was therefore put into service on June 14.
